What we learn from our Red Devils’ World Cup campaign

The World Cup was already a while ago, and unfortunately left a trail of disappointment throughout the country. Both our team’s players and hopeful supporters were left somewhat dejected, and morale sank deep below zero. But isn’t there anything we learn from this woeful experience?

At Corodo, we consider resilience to be one of the most powerful qualities you can possess, or in the case of many: one of the most powerful qualities you can make your own with a lot of practice, practice and more practice. We firmly believe that you can get back on your feet after any setback. But to do so, you need a number of tools.

If we are to stand up straight, brush ourselves off and throw ourselves back into the game again raring to go, we need support and encouragement from those around us. From the team members on whom we build, but with whom we also bundle our strengths on a daily basis. And such an environment is not a given: it is founded on responsibility. On mutual trust and daring to speak out in each other’s company. And decisively acting on exactly what is said.

In other words, it’s about feeling safe in your team and giving each other feedback in a constructive manner. Only then can you move forward together because acting out of fear (as we unfortunately witnessed on the court) will do anything but help you. On the contrary, it inhibits your actions and insights and blocks your view of opportunities you would otherwise have seized with complete confidence. And that’s a shame!

“Your best player should be your team as a whole”

So what are we going to do about it? How do we move forward and leave the past behind us? These are the key questions we need to honestly ask ourselves with our entire team, or in this context: with our entire squad. To exploit the underdog’s position and turn the negative into the positive. To transform disappointment and resentment into willpower and perseverance.

It’s only by daring to share our vision with each other and expressing ourselves in a constructive manner that will we succeed in breaking the vicious circle that the Red Devils were undoubtedly in. Want a piece of advice? Don’t just analyse the games you lose to find out exactly what you can do better with your team. Analyse the games you win too.

After all, what was the reason we did win? How can we rekindle this spirit and these qualities and identify with them? By getting a grip on ourselves and taking responsibility, we offer the opportunity of resilience not to one player, but the whole team. Making your entire team your best player.
